Scientific events/ national symposium

A national symposium was held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Abou El Kacem Saâdallah conference hall of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the University of Tlemcen, under the theme:

"Polygamy in Algerian Society: Between Theoretical Discourse and Practical Reality—A Multidisciplinary Approach," and under the auspices of the university’s rector.

The event brought together a wide range of researchers, academics, and representatives of official and societal institutions from across the country in an atmosphere of rigors and constructive scientific dialogue.

The symposium’s proceedings were structured around five main axes:

First axis: The impact of social transformations in Algeria on the practice of polygamy.

Second axis: The psychological effects of polygamy on wives, husbands, and children, with an analysis of family dynamics in this context.

Third axis: The symbolic and social dimension of polygamy through collective representations, local traditions, and customary norms.

Fourth axis: The religious and legal framework of polygamy, based on Islamic jurisprudence and Algerian legislation.

Fifth axis: The practical aspects of how polygamy cases are handled in courts, highlighting legal gaps and challenges in the application of family law.

This symposium offered a valuable opportunity to cross-examine sociological, psychological, legal, and religious perspectives in order to better understand a complex reality often marked by discrepancies between official texts and actual practices.
