On Monday, May 19, 2025, the University of Tlemcen commemorated the 69th anniversary of Student Day with a significant national ceremony that recalled the sacrifices of Algerian students who answered the call of their nation on May 19, 1956, by leaving their university benches to join the ranks of the liberation revolution.
The ceremony began with the raising of the national flag and the recitation of the Fatiha in memory of the martyrs, in the presence of the General Inspector of the Wilaya, representing the Wali, as well as civil, military, and academic figures, including the University Rector, Pr. Mourad Meghachou, accompanied by several professors, students, and representatives from civil society and student associations.
The event also featured a scientific and cultural exhibition at the central library, organised by the student clubs, as well as a dedicated space for the Regional Museum of the Wilaya of Tlemcen, offering a valuable glimpse into the national memory.
In the "19 May 1956" room, the rector of the university delivered an emotional speech emphasising the importance of cultivating a national sense of pride among students, urging the use of youth energy in scientific and development projects. A message from the President of the Republic was also read by the university's Vice-Rector, Pr. Bounouar Bensaïm, reaffirming the state's commitment to preserving historical memory and strengthening the role of students in the country's construction.
Representatives of the revolutionary family and students expressed their pride in this historical event, stressing that the spirit of struggle continues in the fields of knowledge and education. The ceremony was concluded with a historical lecture by Pr. Ahmed Djafal, who highlighted the significance of the May 19, 1956, strike, followed by a poetic performance and a musical presentation by the Al-Basma Al-Fannia troupe.
At the close of the event, several individuals and participants who contributed to the success of this national event were honoured in a gesture reflecting the university's recognition of those who promote national spirit and preserve collective memory.
Through this initiative, the University of Tlemcen reaffirms that commemorating history is not just a symbolic act but a renewed responsibility aimed at strengthening belonging and guiding efforts towards a future worthy of the sacrifices of ancestors and the aspirations of future generations.
