On Sunday, November 16, 2025, the University of Tlemcen held a solemn ceremony commemorating Professors Rachid BENKHNAFOU (1949–2021) and SARI ALI Hikmet, two prominent figures of the institution. Teachers, administrative officials, and family representatives gathered to honor their enduring contributions to the university community.
This event followed a previous ceremony held last Thursday in memory of Professors Boumediene KERROUM and Abdelkader GUERROUCHE, to whom two structures at the Faculty of Letters and Foreign Languages have been dedicated.
The gathering took place in a reflective atmosphere in the Thesis Defense Hall of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Translation. Following a recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, Deans Prof. Abdelrahmane KHERBOUCHE and Prof. Wassila MOUROU highlighted the importance of preserving the academic legacy of those who contributed to the university’s prestige. Rector Prof. MEGHACHOU Mourad underscored the university’s “moral duty” toward its departed faculty members.
A family member of Prof. SARI ALI Hikmet opened the floor with words of gratitude and emotion. The ceremony also featured two academic presentations:
Prof. Mohamed Toufik BENGHABRIT delivered a moving portrait of Prof. SARI ALI Hikmet in a talk titled “In Memory of Professor SARI ALI Hikmet: A Man of Science, Wisdom, and Light.”
Prof. Abdelmadjid BOUDJELLA traced the career of Prof. Rachid BENKHNAFOU in a presentation entitled “Journey with Destiny: Professor Rachid BENKHNAFOU, the Example and the Man.”
The ceremony drew a wide audience, including active and retired faculty, students, and relatives of the late professors. Prayers, Sufi invocations, and a collective recitation of Al-Fatiha were offered in honor of all university community members who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of preserving their academic legacy, the University of Tlemcen announced the naming of two key spaces:
the new Thesis Defense Hall, named after Prof. Sari Ali Hikmet,
the faculty library, now carrying the name of Prof. Rachid Benkhnafou.
In closing, the University expressed its deep appreciation to the organizers and attendees, commending a commemoration marked by dignity, simplicity, and fidelity to the memory of two professors who profoundly shaped the institution’s academic life.
