On Sunday, February 1, 2026, the University of Tlemcen hosted a scientific conference specializing in demography and population statistics, delivered by Mr. Omar WALI, Director of Population Affairs at the Ministry of Health, and Mr. Omar BENBELLA, Director of the Algiers Regional annex of the National Office of Statistics (ONS).

The conference was organized for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, and took place in the presence of faculty members and students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The presentations highlighted the strategic importance of demography in foresight studies and future planning, emphasizing that any analysis of economic, political, or technological dynamics remains incomplete without addressing key demographic issues related to population size, spatial distribution, and present and future living patterns. The speakers further underlined that demography extends beyond quantitative data, serving as a fundamental analytical framework for interpreting population statistics, understanding development pathways, and supporting evidence-based public policy and decision-making.
