In an atmosphere marked by reflection and a strong sense of historical duty, the University of Tlemcen commemorated, on Thursday, May 7, 2026, National Memory Day dedicated to the May 8, 1945 massacres. The event, held at the conference hall of the Central Library, brought together university officials, faculty members, and students in remembrance of a pivotal moment in Algeria’s national history.

The ceremony opened with the national anthem, followed by the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, setting a solemn tone that reflected the symbolic importance of this date in Algeria’s collective memory.

In his address, the University Rector, Prof. MEGHACHOU Mourad, highlighted the historical significance of May 8, 1945, describing it as “a turning point in the rise of national consciousness and the evolution of the liberation movement.” He stressed the importance of preserving this memory as a foundational element of national identity and as a means of transmitting historical awareness to future generations.

For his part, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Nasr Eddine BENDAOUED, underscored the symbolic dimension of these events, noting their profound impact on the political trajectory of Algeria. According to him, the May 8, 1945 massacres significantly accelerated the revolutionary momentum that ultimately led to the armed struggle for independence.

The commemoration also featured two academic lectures delivered by Prof. Hamza Haddou and Pr. Hadjer Bouziani under the theme: “When Algerian Blood Turned into Victory.” The speakers offered a historical and analytical reading of the events, emphasizing how colonial repression contributed to the emergence of revolutionary consciousness and the structuring of the national liberation movement.

The event concluded with a recognition ceremony honoring the two lecturers for their scholarly contribution to the academic discussion on national memory.

Through this initiative, the University of Tlemcen reaffirms its commitment to preserving historical memory and strengthening national identity, in tribute to the sacrifices of Algeria’s martyrs and freedom fighters.
