The University of Tlemcen commemorated, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the 70th anniversary of Student Day through an official ceremony held under the themes of national memory  and the promotion of the student’s role in nation-building. The event highlighted the historical significance of May 19, 1956, when Algerian students joined the national liberation struggle.
The ceremony was attended by the Wali of Tlemcen wilaya, civil and military authorities, members of the revolutionary family, as well as university officials, faculty members, students, and staff, in a solemn and highly symbolic atmosphere.
The program began with the raising of the national flag, followed by the recitation of Al-Fatiha in memory of the martyrs and the laying of a wreath at the memorial monument. Participants then visited an exhibition held at the central library, showcasing historical documents highlighting the role of the student movement during the Algerian War of Liberation, alongside student scientific club projects and contributions from socio-economic partners, reflecting the university’s openness to its environment.
In the conference hall, official speeches emphasized the significance of this national occasion and the central role of students in building a knowledge-based economy. The Rector of the university stressed the importance of strengthening academic excellence and scientific innovation, while representatives of the revolutionary family recalled key milestones of the student movement's struggle. The student representative reaffirmed the commitment of university youth to serving the nation through knowledge and research. The Wali, for his part, praised the university’s contribution to local and national development.
The event also featured a documentary screening, theatrical performances, and poetry readings dedicated to national memory and the values of sacrifice. A historical lecture on the May 19, 1956 strike highlighted its decisive role in internationalizing the Algerian cause.
The commemoration concluded with an award ceremony honoring mujahideen, families of martyrs, outstanding students, and active student organizations.
