Closing of the Honaïne archaeological excavation

On 28 June 2026, the archaeological excavation campaign at the Dar El Imam site in Honaïne was officially concluded. The excavation was directed by Dr. Sabrina Dahmani in coordination with the National Public Museum of Islamic Archaeology in Tlemcen, following several days of intensive fieldwork.
The campaign resulted in the discovery of a significant assemblage of archaeological remains dating to the Islamic period, including fragments of zellij , decorated plaster elements, a diverse collection of pottery sherds, and other artefacts that further attest to the site's historical and cultural significance.
The closing ceremony was attended by the Project Director, the Museum Director, the Head of the Department of Archaeology, the Rector of the University of Tlemcen, the Head of the Honaïne Daïra, a representative of the Municipality of Honaïne, participating students and researchers, distinguished archaeology faculty members, representatives of local heritage associations, and members of the National Gendarmerie, whose support throughout the excavation campaign is gratefully acknowledged.
The findings constitute an important scientific contribution to the study, preservation, and enhancement of Honaïne's Islamic archaeological heritage, providing valuable new evidence for understanding the city's historical development.
The event concluded with a comprehensive presentation of the excavation's objectives, methodology, and principal findings. Digital media and modern technologies were employed to showcase the discoveries and emphasize their significance for the documentation, conservation, and promotion of the Islamic heritage of the historic city of Honaïne.
